Alokananda Roy, a celebrated Indian classical dancer, choreographer, trainer, social reformer, dance educationist and therapist, began her journey as an uninhibited and ambition-less dancer, who did not accept remunerated stage performances until she started her social initiatives in 2000.
Formally trained in Bharat Natyam and Odissi, she is best known for her innovative dancing styles and creative stage productions. Her formal training also included A Diploma in Rabindra Sangeet from Dakshinee, A Diploma in pianoforte from Trinity College London, and intensive training in Classical Ballet, Russian Style from Calcutta School of Music

Alokananda Roy is an Indian actress known for her work in Bengali cinema and theatre. She made her thespian debut at the age of seven in the 1951 and later on became part of numerous Bengali plays. She made her screen debut with Satyajit Ray's Kanchenjungha (1962).[1] She received a BFJA Award for her role in Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Bengali film Phera (1988).[1] She appeared in National Award winning films such as Paromitar Ek Din, Utsab, Prohor and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero.[2]
Acting career
[edit]After Sharmila Tagore was compelled to decline the role of Manisha in Satyajit Ray's Kanchenjungha (1962), the latter zeroed upon Alokananda Roy to play the character.
