    Elvis Presley was born in 1935 in Mississippi to a poor family. At age 11 he received a guitar instead of a bicycle he wanted due to his family's financial constraints. This gift led him to become one of the most important figures in popular culture in the 20th century as the inventor of rockabilly music. He recorded around 700 songs and sold more albums than all but two artists in US history. In addition to his music career, Elvis Presley also starred in numerous films during the 1960s. He died in 1977 at age 42 reportedly due to health problems from excessive prescription drug use.
