    Tradition and Modernity: Shaping Oman’s Religious Identity Angeliki Ziaka & Niki Papageorgiou In contrast to the traditional world, which seems to be characterized by stability and regularity, the modern world is being shaped through a process of constant changes linked to the transition from traditionality to modernity and from modernity to late modernity.1 Although in recent years social science research has focused on late modernity,2 modernity remains a process that, to a greater or lesser extent, has defined and continues to define the world today through the system of values and institutions it has shaped. It is considered to be a fundamentally Western process, associated with the historical changes that occurred in Western Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, but it also occurs at a different pace in other parts of the world, such as the area under consideration.3 Despite the advent of late modernity during the last quarter of the 20th century, religion remains a basic form of interpretation of the structure and function of modern societies and can well coexist with tradition in many regions of the world.
