Early life[]
Juan Cailles was born in Nasugbu, Batangas to Hippolyte Cailles, a Frenchman. and María Kauppama, a woman of Indian descent from a Maharaja and a Maharani. He was the sixth child of seven. His early education was at the house of Ovidio Caballero and he graduated from the Escuela Normal run by Jesuits in Manila. He became a teacher and taught for five years in the public schools of Amaya, Tanza and Rosario, Cavite.

Biography[]
Juan Cailles y Kauppama was born in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines on 10 November 1871, the son of a French father from Lyon and an Indian mother from Kerala. He was a public school teacher for five years before joining the Katipunan during the Philippine Revolution and organizing a unit from his pupils' fathers. In July 1900, during the Philippine-American War, he became commander of Laguna, and he resisted the Americans until 20 June 1901, when he surrendered on Emilio Aguinaldo's orders. He served as Governor of Laguna from 1901 to 1910, from 1916 to 1925, and from 1931 to 1935, and he died of a heart attack in 1951.
