Yoga continues to grow and grow all around the globe. And for good reasons – the benefits are many. A regular Yoga practice increases vitality, improves mobility and balance while calming the mind. Many contemporary Yoga classes are composed primarily of women with a handful of men. This was not the case at the dawn of the 20th century. Traditionally women practiced Yoga in the home, often separately from men. Female teachers (gurus) were few and far between. A tremendous shift occurred throughout the 20th century thanks to a handful of trailblazing women. According to a study conducted in 2016, approximately 72% of Yoga practitioners and a majority of teachers are women. For Women’s History Month, I honor the lives of five yogini who inspire me through their teachings and life stories.

Blanche DeVries was a respected and beloved Yoga teacher for over 60 years and is credited with opening the first woman-owned Yoga studio in the U.S. Blanche was a free spirit, and a talented singer, dancer and interior designer. Lilias, Yoga and You (later shortened to Lilias!) is a PBS television show hosted by Lilias Folan, a Cincinnati, Ohio based practitioner of yoga as exercise. The show first aired on October 5, 1970 on Cincinnati PBS member station WCET and three years later was carried on PBS across the United States, where it ran until 1999.[2]

[edit]Lilias Folan (born 1936) began to practice yoga as exercise in 1964, and was soon teaching at the YWCA in Stamford, Connecticut.[4] She studied asanas under the yoga masters T. K. V. Desikachar, B. K. S. Iyengar, and Angela Farmer, and gained wider knowledge of yoga under the Sivananda Yoga masters Swami Vishnudevananda and Swami Satchidananda.
