    This portrait of Pope Innocent XI (; Pope ) is similar to that shown on the bronze medal by Giovanni Hamerani (), although on the medal the Pope is shown with full papal vestments and with longer hair; in addition his abbreviated name is given as 'INNOCEN' with two 'n's (examples are in the present collection, including inv. no. , and at the British Museum and elsewhere).     Description

    Pope Innocent XI, Christian Alliance against the Turks, Bronze Medal (35mm/gm) by Giovanni Hamerani. Bust right wearing cap and cope. Rev, four crowns placed on an altar, HABETO NOS FOEDOERATOS ET SERVIEMVS TIBI (Linc ; Roma ; Miselli , a; BDM II, ). Extremely Fine, pleasantly toned and retaining some original lustre around the legend.

    The Alliance – the Holy League of the Empire – was between the Pope, represented on the medal’s reverse with his tiara, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, John III Sobieski of Poland (both crowns) and Marc Antonio Giustiniani, Doge of Venice (cap).
