Ingrid Olson engages with the reciprocities between photography, sculpture, performance, and architecture—with each gesture staged as a manifold approach to materiality, gender, plurality, and power. The artist has an intuitive, studio-based practice. Using apertures, thresholds, reflections, transparency, opacity, light, and shadow as layered devices, Olson’s work collapses the notions of image, support, and frame. While her photographic images frequently capture fragmentary glimpses of her own body, abruptly cropped and abstracted, her sculptural pieces might evoke the presence of a face, chest, waist, or knee without explicitly depicting these body parts. Whether captured with a camera, carved with a machine, cast, built, or found, Olson’s work evidences the movement, change, thought, and habitation that takes place within the parameters of her studio.
